What Is a Banjo Fitting?

A banjo fitting is a ring-shaped fitting (the "banjo") that slips over a hollow banjo bolt; fluid flows through drilled passages in the bolt and into the line. Because the ring can rotate until the bolt is torqued, a banjo connection lets you route a hose in tight spaces where a straight fitting won't clear. You'll find banjo connections on brake hoses at the caliper, fuel and turbo oil feed lines, and power steering pressure lines — anywhere a compact, high-pressure connection is needed. Sealing washers on either side of the banjo do the actual sealing, so use fresh washers whenever the joint is opened.
